AC Milan have been advised to take proactive measures to retain Massimiliano Allegri amid growing interest from the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), who are reportedly considering him as a potential successor to Gennaro Gattuso.

Respected Milan journalist Carlo Pellegatti has warned that Allegri could soon receive an approach from the FIGC, particularly if developments surrounding the national team intensify.

Speaking via PianetaMilan, Pellegatti said:
“Several months ago, I was informed that if Italy were to be eliminated, Allegri could receive a call to replace Gattuso. This is something that concerns me greatly at this moment.

“We must be cautious, because they could turn to Allegri. I have also been told that Antonio Conte is among the candidates under consideration.”

Pellegatti, one of the most experienced journalists covering Milan, urged the club’s hierarchy to ensure Allegri remains fully committed to the Rossoneri project.

“What might Allegri say? This is precisely why Milan must support his requests and place their trust in him, ensuring he is not tempted should an offer arrive,” he added.

Gattuso has yet to step down from his role as Italy’s head coach. However, recent reports indicate that the FIGC has requested he remain in charge for two additional fixtures in June before his contract expires.

Meanwhile, significant changes have taken place within the federation. FIGC President Gabriele Gravina has resigned, along with delegation chief Gianluigi Buffon.

A new FIGC president is set to be elected on 22 June, meaning the Italy national football team are unlikely to appoint a new head coach before that date.

According to reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport, both Conte and Roberto Mancini could also emerge as candidates for the role once Gattuso departs.
