Three people were killed and four injured after a passenger van struck an elephant in Uganda’s Murchison Falls National Park. The driver lost control after the collision, leading to the crash. Authorities have urged motorists to drive carefully in wildlife areas as investigations continue.

A passenger van has struck an elephant inside Uganda’s Murchison Falls National Park, resulting in a tragic crash that left three people dead and four others injured, according to police authorities.
The incident occurred on Sunday along a paved road within the national park, one of Uganda’s most well-known wildlife reserves. Police said the van was carrying employees of the Uganda Revenue Authority who were travelling from a city in northern Uganda to the capital, Kampala, when the collision happened.
According to a statement released on Monday, the vehicle hit the elephant while moving through the protected area. The driver reportedly lost control immediately after the impact, causing the van to veer off course and crash, which led to the fatalities and injuries among the passengers.
Authorities have urged all motorists to take extreme caution when driving through national parks and wildlife corridors, stressing that such areas are shared spaces between humans and animals and require heightened awareness and reduced speed to prevent accidents.
Eyewitness footage from the scene showed a severely damaged vehicle with passengers calling for help amid the wreckage. Nearby, the injured elephant was seen struggling to get back on its feet in a bushy area close to the road. Officials have not confirmed whether the animal survived the incident.
Conservation experts say that although collisions between vehicles and wildlife are relatively rare, they highlight a persistent issue known as human-wildlife conflict. This occurs when roads, settlements, and increasing human activity intersect with natural habitats, sometimes leading to dangerous encounters between people and animals.
In protected areas like Murchison Falls National Park, which is home to elephants, lions, and other wildlife, vehicles often pass through designated roads that cut across animal migration routes. Experts warn that without strict adherence to speed limits and safety guidelines, such incidents may continue to occur.
Authorities are expected to carry out further investigations into the crash, including reviewing road safety measures within the park and assessing whether additional precautions may be needed to prevent future accidents.
