Respected football pundit Dietmar Hamann has offered a comprehensive analysis of Bayern Munich’s 2024/25 season, with particular focus on the performance of head coach Vincent Kompany.

“I think he has done okay,” Hamann said in an interview conducted on behalf of LeoVegas. “He’s steadied the ship after a lot of unrest in the camp last season. Vincent Kompany appears to have a very good relationship with the players, which is a significant contrast to the situation under Thomas Tuchel.

“In the league, they’ve been quite solid – they’ve only lost two matches and, with two or three games remaining, they’ve all but secured the Bundesliga title after missing out last season. They were unfortunate in the cup against Bayer Leverkusen – they went down to ten men and still performed very well.”

However, Hamann was more critical of the club’s European campaign.

“In the Champions League, improvement is needed. They lost three matches in the group stage, had to go through the play-offs, and were fortunate to get past Celtic. Their best performances came against Leverkusen, but the tie with Inter Milan was disappointing. Many expected them to progress and face Barcelona in the semi-finals. Vincent has done a decent job – domestically, they’ve been strong, but their European form must be better.”

When asked what Bayern could have done differently this season, Hamann highlighted both injury woes and tactical shortcomings.

“They’ve had quite a few players out injured. Jamal Musiala has been sidelined but should be back in time for the Club World Cup. Dayot Upamecano, who has improved under Kompany, has also missed recent weeks. Leroy Sané enjoyed a good run of form, but consistency among the wide players has been lacking.”

Hamann was particularly critical of Bayern’s defensive frailties.

“The defence has been their Achilles’ heel. They’ve conceded too many goals, and that’s an area that urgently needs reinforcement – especially in central defence. The team has relied heavily on individual brilliance from Michael Olise, Jamal Musiala and Harry Kane, who’s been the main source of goals. What’s missing is a cohesive attacking rhythm, a fluidity to break teams down like Bayer Leverkusen managed last season.”

Looking ahead to the 2025/26 campaign, Hamann believes Kompany deserves the opportunity to continue in the role.

“It’s Kompany’s first season managing a top-level club, and Bayern Munich isn’t an easy environment. Big names like Tuchel and Carlo Ancelotti didn’t last long here. Kompany has done enough to earn another season, but Champions League form needs to improve.

“The club will likely review every position, but when a new manager comes in, wins the league – which is the minimum expectation – and builds rapport with the squad, he deserves credit. He’s adapted well, and speaking the language has helped him settle in. I’d be surprised if he isn’t Bayern Munich’s manager next season.”
