Villarreal have spoiled Barcelona’s title celebrations by handing the Catalan side their first defeat of 2025 in La Liga.
Villarreal Spoil Barcelona’s Title Celebrations

Having secured their 28th league title earlier in the week, Barcelona presented the trophy to their supporters in the team’s final home match of the season at Montjuïc Stadium on Sunday.
Players were introduced individually after the game, which Villarreal won 3-2, before the trophy presentation. Barcelona’s Spanish Super Cup and Copa del Rey trophies were also on display at Montjuïc.
“We can be proud of this team for winning these titles and for how it achieved them,” said Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen. “We had a great season on all fronts.”
Real Madrid recorded a 2-0 victory at nine-man Sevilla, with Kylian Mbappé extending his league-leading tally to 29 goals with one match remaining. Madrid now have 81 points, four fewer than Barcelona.
Villarreal’s win secured their return to the Champions League for the first time since their semi-final run in 2022. They will join Barcelona, Madrid, Atlético Madrid and Athletic Bilbao in Europe’s premier club competition next season, with Spain boasting five representatives in total.
Real Betis have claimed one of the Europa League spots, while Celta Vigo, Rayo Vallecano and Osasuna will battle for the remaining Europa League place and the Conference League spot.
Leganés and Espanyol will fight to avoid the final relegation place in the closing round, with Leganés visiting bottom club Valladolid and Espanyol facing already relegated Las Palmas.
Barcelona, Madrid, Atlético and Athletic will also compete in next season’s lucrative Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia.
All ten matches were played simultaneously on Sunday.
Barcelona had not suffered a league defeat since a 2-1 loss to Atlético on 21 December, recording 15 wins and two draws since then.
Ayoze Pérez gave Villarreal the lead with a breakaway goal just four minutes into the match. The hosts responded when teenager Lamine Yamal curled in a left-footed effort from outside the area.
Fermín López put Barcelona ahead in first-half stoppage time, but Santiago Comesaña equalised for Villarreal in the 50th minute, before Tajon Buchanan struck the winner in the 80th.
Mbappé further bolstered his chances of finishing as top scorer this season with a low shot from outside the area in the 75th minute for Real Madrid.
He now leads the scoring charts with 29 league goals, ahead of Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski, who has 25.
Leganés kept their survival hopes alive with a 1-0 win at Las Palmas, thanks to an early goal by Dani Raba in the sixth minute.
They remain two points adrift of the first team outside the relegation zone, Espanyol, who stayed in danger following a 2-0 defeat at Osasuna.
Alavés escaped relegation danger by winning 1-0 at Valladolid, while Getafe did likewise with a 2-1 victory over Mallorca.
Celta Vigo lost 2-1 at home to Rayo Vallecano but hold the final Europa League place in seventh, one point clear of both eighth-placed Rayo — currently in the Conference League position — and ninth-placed Osasuna.
The top two teams in the league and the Copa del Rey finalists qualify for the Spanish Super Cup. Since this season’s final was contested between Barcelona and Madrid, two additional places were allocated through league positions.
Third-placed Atlético confirmed their place with a 4-1 win over Betis, including a brace from Julián Álvarez. Fourth-placed Athletic Bilbao secured their spot with a 1-0 win at Valencia, courtesy of a goal by Álex Berenguer.
