UEFA has confirmed that Daniel Siebert will take charge of Manchester United’s UEFA Europa League semi-final second leg against Athletic Club.
Man United v Athletic Bilbao: Referee Confirmed as Ruben Amorim Brings Encouraging Omen

The German official will be supported by assistant referees Jan Seidel and Rafael Foltyn at Old Trafford, with Tobias Stieler named as the fourth official. Christian Dingert will serve as the video assistant referee (VAR), with Soeren Storks acting as assistant VAR – completing an all-German officiating team.
This will mark the second time Siebert has overseen a Manchester United fixture during his tenure as a FIFA-listed referee, which spans over a decade. The previous occasion was also in the Europa League, at Old Trafford, against another La Liga side.
On that night, Siebert officiated the round of 16 first leg against Real Betis, which United won 4-1. Marcus Rashford netted the opener following a swift counter-attack inside six minutes. However, former Newcastle United and Southampton forwards Ayoze Pérez and Juanmi linked up to level the score just after the half-hour mark.
United regained the lead early in the second half through Antony, who was set up by Bruno Fernandes. Fernandes then found the net himself six minutes later with a header from a Luke Shaw corner.
Wout Weghorst later completed the scoring to give Erik ten Hag’s side a commanding advantage going into the return leg. On that occasion, Siebert issued just two yellow cards – one to Weghorst for dissent between the second and third goals, and another to Fernandes ten minutes after his goal for a foul.
This will be the first time Siebert has officiated an Athletic Club match. Spanish sides, in general, have a modest record under his watch – just six wins from 18 UEFA competition fixtures, alongside five draws and seven defeats.
English clubs, by contrast, boast a far stronger record with Siebert in the middle – ten victories from 15 matches, with four draws and a single loss. Notably, that lone defeat came in November.
It was a memorable fixture, as Ruben Amorim’s Sporting CP stunned Manchester City with a 4-1 victory in the Champions League, shortly after Amorim had been named Manchester United’s new head coach. Siebert awarded three penalties during the second half, with Viktor Gyökeres converting two – either side of a missed effort by Erling Haaland.
