Kenya, China Sign $1B Deal to Boost Key Economic Sectors

Kenyan President William Ruto has formalized a $1 billion agreement with China during a five-day state visit intended to enhance the strategic relationship between Nairobi and Beijing.
Announced on Wednesday, the agreement is centered on fast-tracking key development initiatives aligned with Kenya’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), with a strong emphasis on investments in manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism.
President Ruto underscored the enduring partnership between Kenya and China, pointing to the transformative effects of Chinese-backed infrastructure projects such as the Standard Gauge Railway, Lamu Port, and the Nairobi Expressway.
“We have accomplished a great deal together,” Ruto stated in a speech delivered in Beijing. “Kenya is an active member of the Belt and Road Initiative, and its outcomes are evident — from the Mombasa–Nairobi–Naivasha railway and the Mombasa oil terminal to a wide range of road infrastructure. These developments are not only reshaping Kenya’s internal landscape but are also boosting regional connectivity across East Africa.”
The recently concluded agreements will direct over $950 million into vital economic sectors: $320 million is earmarked for manufacturing, $430 million for agriculture, and $230 million for tourism.
Among the notable deals are a $150 million investment from China Wu Yi for construction initiatives, $400 million in agricultural projects spearheaded by the Zonken Group in Baringo County, and a $230 million tourism venture by Hunan Conference Exhibition Group — marking the group’s debut investment in Kenya.
This marks President Ruto’s third visit to China since assuming office, taking place against the backdrop of evolving global alliances. The visit underscores Kenya’s dedication to deepening its engagement with China in the face of ongoing global economic shifts.
“This visit is a testament to the enduring friendship between our two countries and reflects our shared aspirations for a prosperous future,” Ruto remarked.
