Eni Aluko is reportedly 'on thin ice' and could be facing the axe from her position on ITV programming following the controversial comments she made about Arsenal legend Ian Wright. Aluko, 38, accused Wright of blocking opportunities for female pundits within the women’s game.

Despite Wright's extensive work supporting the growth of the women’s game in recent years — including his vocal endorsement on various platforms and support for the footballers involved — Aluko claimed that he should not be allowed to 'dominate' the sport. She stated:

"I’ve worked with Ian for a long time and, you know, I think he’s a brilliant broadcaster, but I think he’s aware of just how much he’s doing in the women’s game. I think he should be aware of that."

Much has been made of the comments made by the former England and Chelsea star, with Mail Sport now reporting that there is a possibility of Aluko facing dismissal from ITV. She regularly appears as a pundit for women’s matches on the UK broadcaster but is said to have landed herself in hot water with her recent remarks.

Eni Aluko 'On Thin Ice' With ITV

According to a report in the Daily Mail, a TV source has claimed that Aluko could now be in a great deal of trouble after her recent comments: "Aluko's on very thin ice, the comments she made were ill-judged to say the least."

It has also been stated that ITV considers Aluko’s call for more inclusion and diversity to be ‘factually incorrect’ and ‘disrespectful’, given that those are values the channel prides itself on. The source continued:

"ITV prides itself on having a diverse roster of pundits and presenters across its sports content, and there is a significant female influence when covering women’s football.

"So for her to criticise the use of Wright and suggest he’s dominating the game is not only factually incorrect, but it’s also very disrespectful, considering how he’s helped raise the profile of women’s football."

The pundit's future is now uncertain, as it was revealed: "Her comments have upset a lot of people, and there have been serious discussions about whether she can work for the broadcaster again in the near future."

Wright is currently paying for Stoke City's Kayleigh McDonald’s rehabilitation after her club refused to fund it. McDonald took to social media as Aluko’s comments spread, jumping to the defence of the former Arsenal and England man.
