Cyriel Dessers was visibly frustrated when referee Irfan Peljto brandished a yellow card after the Rangers striker was forced to change his torn shirt during the match against Athletic Bilbao.

Moments earlier, Dessers had been left on the ground inside the penalty area following a clear tug on his jersey by Dani Vivian.

With no genuine attempt to play the ball, the Athletic Bilbao defender held firmly onto Dessers' shirt, dragging the striker down just as a pass was played into his path.

Despite the clear infringement, referee Peljto waved away the appeals and no penalty was awarded — nor did VAR intervene to review the decision.

Television cameras soon highlighted the large tear across the front of Dessers' shirt, the result of the challenge inside the box.

The striker was then instructed by the referee to leave the pitch to change into a new shirt before rejoining play.

However, having swapped shirts on the sidelines, Dessers returned to the pitch to resume his position just prior to a throw-in — only for Peljto to immediately issue a yellow card.

Despite being fully aware of the circumstances surrounding the shirt change, the referee cautioned the forward for re-entering the field of play without the required permission.

Under the International Football Association Board (IFAB) Laws of the Game, entering, re-entering, or deliberately leaving the field without the referee’s consent is considered a cautionable offence.

Dessers was instructed to return to the touchline and await the official’s signal before rejoining the action. After a brief delay, he was eventually permitted to return once the throw-in had been taken.
