Spring storm causes deadly floods and snow damage across Alps, hitting Italy, Switzerland, and France.

A heavy spring storm on Friday is wreaking havoc across Europe’s Alps region, with Italy, Switzerland, and France among the countries affected.

The weather system is bringing heavy rainfall to northern Italy, especially in the Piedmont, South Tyrol, and Lombardy regions, leading to widespread flooding.

In the town of Valdagno, floodwaters swept away a car, resulting in the deaths of a father and son.

In Piedmont, firefighters discovered the body of a 92-year-old man on Thursday after his home was inundated. In response to the severe weather, Piedmont has allocated €5 million ($5.7 million) in emergency aid.

Flooding has also triggered evacuations in the Aosta Valley, where approximately 6,400 people have been left without electricity, according to the Italian news agency ANSA. The Aosta Valley is located east of France and south of Switzerland.

In Milan, some parks were closed due to strong winds and the risk of flooding. In Turin, officials urged residents to remain indoors.

In Switzerland, the Alpine resort of Zermatt in the southern canton of Valais has experienced electricity and phone network outages as a result of heavy snow. Access roads to the town have been blocked by the storm.

In Sion, also located in Valais, around 36,000 people were instructed to stay indoors and wait for the weather to improve.

Meanwhile, in the French resort town of Val Thorens, a woman lost her life after suffering a heart attack caused by an avalanche impact.

The storm coincides with the Easter holiday weekend across Europe, disrupting travel plans and causing train delays.
