Fire destroys 50+ homes in Darfur IDP camp amid Sudan's ongoing conflict and worsening humanitarian crisis.

A devastating fire destroyed over 50 homes in a camp for displaced persons in Sudan’s western Darfur region, according to an aid group on Thursday.

Video footage released by the General Coordination for Displaced Persons and Refugees in Darfur captured the blaze, which occurred on Tuesday in the Mukjar camp. Although no casualties were reported, the fire has significantly worsened the already difficult living conditions for those displaced by the conflict. The exact cause of the fire remains unknown.

This incident follows a report by the United Nations humanitarian agency on Monday, which stated that more than 300 civilians were killed during two days of intense fighting in the conflict-ridden Darfur region.

Sudan has been gripped by war since April 15, 2023, when escalating tensions between the military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) erupted into violence in the capital, Khartoum, quickly spreading to other parts of the country, including Darfur.

According to the United Nations, at least 24,000 people have been killed since the conflict began, although local activists believe the actual number is significantly higher.

The RSF reportedly carried out recent attacks following the Sudanese military’s recapture of Khartoum late last month, a key symbolic gain in the ongoing power struggle.

The war has triggered what is now the world’s largest humanitarian and displacement crisis. Sudan is also currently the only country facing famine, underscoring the catastrophic impact of the conflict on its population.
