Scores Killed in Attack by Gunmen in Central Nigeria

The attack on Monday occurred exactly one week after a similar raid that claimed 52 lives. Armed assailants, believed to be cattle rustlers, targeted two villages in the Bassa district of Plateau State, shooting and hacking their victims. Rescue teams were able to recover at least 51 bodies from the scene. Additionally, dozens more individuals sustained injuries. A local resident, who spoke with Reuters, mentioned that a mass burial was held for the victims.
Plateau, located in the central region of Nigeria, is one of the country's most ethnically diverse states. Inter-communal violence, often involving Christian farmers and predominantly Muslim herders, is unfortunately common in the region.
Amnesty International reported that the attackers not only killed and injured many people but also destroyed and looted homes in the area. The organization condemned the attack, attributing it to "inexcusable" security failures.
