Rob Walter has resigned as South Africa’s limited-overs coach, citing personal reasons on Tuesday, leaving a sense of what might have been for the team.
Rob Walter Resigns as South Africa Coach

Walter, who had been in charge for two years, led the team to the final of last year’s T20 World Cup. However, despite holding a commanding position, they were defeated by India in the final. Under his leadership, South Africa also reached the semi-finals of the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup and the recent ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan and Dubai.
In a statement issued by Cricket South Africa (CSA), Walter said, “The players, support staff, and the South African cricketing community have been fantastic throughout this journey. While it is time for me to step away, I have no doubt that the team will continue to grow and reach even greater heights.”
South Africa is set to co-host the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup alongside Namibia and Zimbabwe. CSA has yet to announce Walter’s replacement.
South Africa’s next limited-overs assignment will be an all-format tour to Zimbabwe in July, which will feature a T20 tri-series with New Zealand. They will also tour Australia and England later in the year. The South African team will also compete in the World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord’s from June 11–15, with Shukri Conrad coaching the Test side.
