Iran Vows Retaliation Amid Rising Tensions with U.S. Over Nuclear Program

Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has vowed to retaliate against any attacks on Iran, following threats made by U.S. President Donald Trump. These remarks came after Tehran rejected direct negotiations with the United States in response to a letter from Trump regarding Iran's rapidly advancing nuclear program.
Trump's approach to engagement comes amid warnings from both Israel and the United States that they will never allow Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon. This has raised concerns about a potential military confrontation, as Iran enriches uranium at levels near those required for nuclear weapons production—a practice typically associated with nuclear-armed states.
During Trump’s first term, the U.S. unilaterally withdrew from the 2015 nuclear agreement, which had been signed between Iran and world powers. Following the U.S. exit, sanctions on Iran were reinstated, causing the deal to collapse.
Iran has consistently stated that its nuclear program is intended for peaceful purposes, despite increasing threats from its officials to pursue nuclear weapons. This comes amidst rising tensions with the U.S. over sanctions, as well as the collapse of a ceasefire in Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza.
