India, Pakistan Exchange Fire in Kashmir After Border Incursion

On Tuesday, the Indian and Pakistani armies exchanged fire following an attempted incursion in the Poonch district of the northern Jammu and Kashmir region, according to media reports citing an Indian Army statement released on Wednesday.
The statement detailed that a mine blast occurred in the Krishna Ghati Sector during an attempted incursion from across the border. This event, the statement claimed, was followed by "unprovoked firing and ceasefire violation by the Pakistan Army."
On Wednesday, the Indian Army reassured that the situation is under control and is being closely monitored.
The Army statement, as cited by media outlets, emphasized the importance of upholding the ceasefire agreement, which was renewed on February 25, 2021, between the two neighboring countries. The agreement was established to maintain peace along the Line of Control (LoC).
Meanwhile, Indian security forces have intensified operations in the Panjtirthi region of Jammu following an encounter with militants on March 31.
The recent exchange of fire occurred in an area where separatist militants have been engaged in armed conflict with security forces for decades. The prolonged unrest has resulted in the deaths of thousands of people over the years.
India and Pakistan both lay claim to the strategically significant Himalayan region of Kashmir, which remains divided, with different parts administered by India, Pakistan, and China.
India maintains that the militancy in Kashmir is a form of Pakistan-sponsored terrorism, an accusation that Pakistan denies. Many Kashmiris, on the other hand, see the movement as a legitimate struggle for freedom.
