A speeding minibus lost control, crashed into a stationary vehicle, and fatally struck a hearing-impaired pedestrian at a Lagos bus stop. Authorities responded swiftly, and officials urged drivers to obey speed limits and maintain their vehicles.
Speeding Minibus Kills Hearing-Impaired Pedestrian at Lagos Bus Stop

A pedestrian with a hearing impairment lost their life in a tragic accident involving two commercial minibuses on Sunday along Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, inward Maryland, Lagos State.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday, explaining that one of the minibuses lost control due to excessive speeding. The vehicle then crashed into a stationary minibus before striking the pedestrian, who was waiting at a designated bus stop near Temac Filling Station.
LASEMA’s spokesperson, Taofiq Adebayo, stated that officers from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Area F Police Division promptly responded to the accident scene.
The official statement read: "In a harrowing and unfortunate incident, a deaf pedestrian met a tragic and untimely demise while innocently awaiting a commercial bus at a designated stop along Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, inward Maryland, adjacent to Temac Filling Station. The fatal collision involved two Suzuki mini commercial buses (Korope) with registration numbers EPE 279 YJ and BDG 558 YG.
"Preliminary investigations suggest that reckless speeding caused one of the vehicles to veer out of control, leading it to crash violently into a stationary minibus before fatally striking the unsuspecting pedestrian.
"Demonstrating swift crisis intervention in accordance with the United Nations Response Time (UNRT), operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) promptly arrived at the scene, securing the affected area and summoning law enforcement officers from the Area F Police Division. The police subsequently took custody of both vehicles for a thorough investigation."
Officials from the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit later evacuated the remains of the victim.
Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, cautioned commercial drivers against reckless driving and emphasized the importance of maintaining their vehicles, particularly their braking systems.
Giwa also underscored the role of Lagos’ Intelligent Transport System, which monitors speed violations at key locations such as Alapere, Ogudu Road, and Nitel, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way. He urged all drivers to adhere strictly to speed limits to prevent avoidable accidents.
"Ensuring road safety is a collective responsibility. Indiscriminate speeding and flagrant disregard for traffic laws pose a serious threat to public safety. I implore all motorists to operate strictly within legal speed limits to prevent unnecessary loss of human lives," he stated.
