Trump is confident a deal will be reached for TikTok before the April 5 deadline, allowing it to remain in the U.S. despite past national security concerns.

President Donald Trump expressed confidence on Sunday that a deal regarding TikTok would be reached before the April 5 deadline for its Chinese owner, ByteDance, to sell the popular short-video app or face a ban in the United States.

"We have a lot of potential buyers. There’s tremendous interest in TikTok," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One.

"We have a lot of people that want to buy TikTok. We’re dealing with China also on it because they may have something to do with it," he added. "I’d like to see TikTok remain alive."

Trump stated earlier this month that the United States was in discussions with four groups interested in acquiring the platform, which boasts 170 million American users.

A U.S. law mandates that TikTok must be divested from ByteDance or risk being banned in the country. The law was enacted due to concerns that the Chinese government could potentially use the app for surveillance or to covertly influence American public opinion.

The law officially took effect on January 19, just a day before Trump’s inauguration. However, upon taking office, he promptly announced a delay that has allowed TikTok to continue operating.

That delay is set to expire on April 5.

According to AFP, when asked whether he would extend the deadline if no deal was reached, Trump responded, "There’ll be a deal with TikTok, I’m pretty certain."

During his first term in the White House, Trump attempted to ban TikTok over national security concerns but has since softened his stance on the platform.

"Selfishly speaking, I won the young vote by 36 points. Republicans generally don’t do very well with the young crowd, and I think a lot of it could have been TikTok," he remarked.
