Arda Güler has delivered a scathing response to Dominik Szoboszlai, branding the Liverpool midfielder "a joke" following their heated exchange during Turkey’s UEFA Nations League clash with Hungary.
Arda Güler Hits Back at Dominik Szoboszlai as Tensions Escalate Following Nations League Clash

Güler played a pivotal role in Turkey’s promotion to League A, scoring in their 3-0 victory in Budapest, which secured a 6-1 aggregate triumph and relegated Hungary to League B. However, the on-field contest spilled over into a social media war between the two players.
Szoboszlai’s Social Media Jibe
During the match, Güler celebrated his goal by making a shush gesture directed at Szoboszlai. The Hungarian captain later took to Instagram, leaving a cheeky comment under a photo of the celebration. He posted “1088”, referencing the limited 1,088 minutes Güler has played for Real Madrid this season due to competition in Carlo Ancelotti’s star-studded squad.
Güler’s Ruthless Clapback
Güler wasted no time in responding, reposting the image on his Instagram story with a biting caption:
"This guy is a joke. Isn't six goals enough to shut you up?"
Adding insult to injury, the Turkish youngster also edited the scoreboard graphic in the image, highlighting Turkey’s 3-0 win while sarcastically crediting Hungary’s scoreline to “Szoboszlai, 1 Instagram comment”, as reported by the Liverpool Echo.
Szoboszlai’s Form vs. Güler’s Struggles
Despite Szoboszlai’s international setback, the Liverpool playmaker has been in strong form this season, helping Liverpool maintain a 12-point lead at the top of the Premier League. He has registered seven goals and six assists across all competitions, already surpassing his contributions from last season.
Güler, meanwhile, has struggled for game time at Real Madrid, starting just one of his seven appearances this campaign. He did feature in Madrid’s 2-0 defeat at Anfield in November, though he was substituted after 56 minutes, shortly after Alexis Mac Allister scored for Liverpool.
Will Szoboszlai Respond?
With tensions running high, it remains to be seen whether Szoboszlai will continue the feud or choose to let the matter rest. However, given their competitive nature, this may not be the last exchange between the two talented midfielders.
