Tom Edwards will complete a remarkable ascent from Swan Districts high-flyer to Essendon forward when he makes his much-anticipated debut against Adelaide at the MCG on Saturday.

The Bombers recruited Edwards last month through the pre-season supplemental selection period after he impressed during a brief training spell with the club.

The 24-year-old made an immediate impact, booting four goals in just a quarter and a half during Essendon’s match simulation against the Western Bulldogs, earning a place on their senior list only days later.

Edwards continued to showcase his talent last weekend, kicking two goals for Essendon’s VFL side in a practice match defeat to Box Hill. His performance highlighted the qualities that saw him amass 70 goals over the past two seasons with Swan Districts.

Now, just weeks after working as a school teacher, he will take to the field against the Crows.

“Pulling on the Essendon jumper for the first time is beyond a dream come true,” Edwards said.

“A month ago, I was teaching sport science and maths to students at Lesmurdie High School in Perth, and now I have the chance to run out onto the MCG in front of the Essendon supporters. It’s just unbelievable.”

“Saturday is going to be huge, and I’m so excited and grateful for the opportunity.

“It’s been a whirlwind career shift over the past few weeks, but the transition has felt seamless thanks to the support from everyone at the club. It’s a surreal feeling, but I can’t wait to don the sash and run out with the boys.”

Edwards also spoke about what it means to debut for his childhood club.

“To do it with the team I supported as a kid means so much to me and my family. I lived and breathed Essendon growing up, so this moment is incredibly special.

“I just want to soak it all in and play an important role in helping the team secure victory against Adelaide.”
