Crystal Palace sporting director Dougie Freedman has announced his departure from the club and is expected to take up a role in Saudi Arabia.

The 50-year-old, who has served in the position at Selhurst Park since 2017, previously played for and managed the Eagles.

Freedman played a key role in establishing a sustainable scouting structure at the club, overseeing the recruitment of players such as Marc Guéhi, Adam Wharton, Michael Olise, and Eberechi Eze.

Although his next move has yet to be officially confirmed, reports suggest he has been offered a position with the Diriyah Company, the owners of Saudi Arabian second-tier club Al-Diriyah.

Eagles chairman Steve Parish paid tribute to Freedman’s contributions, stating: “Dougie has been instrumental in everything we have achieved over the past eight years and had a significant impact even before that as manager and, of course, as a player.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed working with him and wish him every success in the future. Dougie leaves behind an outstanding and well-structured sporting department that I am confident will continue to grow from strength to strength.”

Reflecting on his departure, Freedman said: “I would like to extend my gratitude to Steve Parish, the other owners, and all the staff, managers, and players I have worked with during my time at the club. It has been a privilege to learn from and collaborate with such a fantastic group of people.

“It has been an honour to represent Crystal Palace, and I take immense pride in the progress the club has made, with the chairman’s support, in establishing itself in its current position.

“With a squad full of exciting talent led by an excellent manager, I truly believe the foundations are in place for further success.

“Finally, a heartfelt thank you to the fans for your unwavering support and passion—especially in helping new signings and Academy graduates settle into life at Selhurst Park.

“Crystal Palace will always hold a special place in my heart, and I will continue to follow the club’s progress closely.”

Freedman is expected to remain with Palace on a short-term basis to assist with the club’s succession planning, while long-term consultant Iain Moody could see his responsibilities expanded.
