M6 Crash: Lorry Driver Killed, Motorist Injured as Major Collision Shuts Motorway

A lorry driver has been killed, and another driver has been seriously injured following a major crash on the M6 motorway in Staffordshire. The southbound section of the motorway remains closed between Junction 16 near Crewe and Junction 15 near Stoke-on-Trent as authorities continue their investigation and clean-up efforts.
The fatal accident occurred at approximately 9:50 pm on Thursday. The driver of a lorry, who had stepped out of his broken-down HGV, was struck and tragically died at the scene. His family is being supported by specialist officers during this difficult time.
Police have launched an appeal for witnesses to come forward with any information about the collision, which involved a Toyota Avensis and a white MAN Truck HGV. They are particularly interested in obtaining dashcam footage from drivers who were in the area at the time of the crash to aid in their investigation.
The driver of the Toyota Avensis survived the collision but suffered significant injuries, including leg and facial wounds. He was taken to the hospital for treatment, and his injuries have been described as serious but not life-threatening.
A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police urged potential witnesses to help with the ongoing investigation, stating, "We are keen to speak to anyone who was traveling in the area with any information or dashcam footage which could help collision investigators."
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman provided further details about the emergency response, explaining, "On arrival, crews found two men. The first patient, the driver of the lorry, was found in a critical condition, and sadly, it quickly became apparent that nothing could be done to save him. He was confirmed deceased at the scene."
Images from the crash site show a lorry stopped on the hard shoulder, with emergency crews having erected a green protective barrier around it.
National Highways has issued an update regarding traffic conditions, stating that normal traffic flow is not expected to resume until around 3 pm. Motorists are being advised to find alternative routes and allow extra time for their journeys while the closure remains in place.
