A boat capsized near Breezy Point, NYC, killing four, hospitalizing two, and leaving one person missing. The Coast Guard continues searching as the cause remains under investigation.

According to the Associated Press, a tragic boating accident in New York City left three people dead, two others hospitalized, and one person missing after a boat sank on Sunday. The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed the incident, which took place several miles offshore.

Authorities reported that one of the hospitalized individuals remained in critical condition as of Monday morning. The incident occurred when a speedboat started taking on water approximately five miles (8 kilometers) southeast of Breezy Point, a neighborhood located at the southern tip of Queens’ Rockaway Peninsula.

The second hospitalized individual was in stable condition, according to officials.

“The Coast Guard is still searching for the missing individual,” Coast Guard spokesperson Sydney Phoenix said in an email to the Associated Press on Monday morning. “We currently have an aircrew from Air Station Atlantic City and the Coast Guard Cutter [William] Chadwick in the area.”

Coast Guard rescue teams responded quickly to assist the boaters on Sunday. Additionally, multiple agencies, including the New York Police Department (NYPD), the New York Fire Department (FDNY), the New Jersey State Police, and the Sandy Hook Pilots, joined the search and rescue efforts.

By Monday, CBS News reported that a fourth person had died due to the accident.

One of the victims of the capsizing was identified as 50-year-old Cecilio Adamas. His wife, Francisca Adamas, spoke to CBS News and confirmed that her husband had gone on a fishing trip with five friends before the tragedy occurred.

“At 10 a.m., I called him. I said, ‘Is everything OK?’” Francisca Adamas recalled in an interview with CBS. “He said, ‘Oh, there’s a lot of wind.’”

As of Monday, authorities had not yet determined the cause of the sinking, and an investigation was ongoing.
