Bayern Munich secured a 2-1 victory over Celtic in the first leg of their Champions League playoff on Wednesday, scoring either side of half-time through Michael Olise and Harry Kane before withstanding late pressure from the hosts.

Olise opened the scoring in spectacular fashion on the stroke of half-time at Celtic Park in Glasgow, while Kane doubled Bayern’s lead in the 49th minute with a volley at the far post.
Celtic had found the net inside the first minute through Nicolas Kühn, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. However, they reignited the contest in the 79th minute when Daizen Maeda’s close-range header set up a tense finale.
“There were definitely areas where we could have done better, and we’ll need to improve for next week, but overall, we scored at the right times,” said England striker Kane.
“They put us under pressure at the end, and we had to stay strong, which we did. Whenever you win a game like this, you're always pleased because it’s not an easy place to come.”
Bayern, aiming to reach this year’s final at their own Allianz Arena in Munich, dominated possession in the first half but found Celtic’s disciplined defence difficult to break down.
Despite an early chance for Kane, it took a moment of brilliance from Olise to break the deadlock. The attacking midfielder controlled a deep cross from Dayot Upamecano, cut inside, and unleashed an unstoppable shot into the top corner.
Bayern struck again just four minutes into the second half when Kane was left unmarked at the far post, volleying in directly from a Joshua Kimmich corner. The goal made Kane the first English player to score 60 goals in UEFA club competitions.
The German side were fortunate not to concede a penalty in the 57th minute when Upamecano stepped on Arne Engels’ foot inside the box. However, after a lengthy VAR review, the referee opted against awarding a spot-kick.
Celtic nearly pulled a goal back in the 74th minute when Maeda beat Manuel Neuer to the ball, only for his shot to roll parallel to the empty net before being cleared. The Japanese forward made no mistake moments later, heading home from close range to reduce the deficit.
Bayern defended resolutely as Celtic pressed for an equaliser, with Neuer producing a crucial save in stoppage time to ensure the visitors took a slender advantage into Tuesday’s return leg in Munich, where a place in the last 16 will be decided.
Feyenoord Punish Milan Error, Benfica Edge Closer to Last 16
Elsewhere on Wednesday, Feyenoord claimed a 1-0 home victory over AC Milan at Stadion Feijenoord in Rotterdam, capitalising on a costly goalkeeping error just two days after sacking their manager.
Igor Paixão netted the only goal in the third minute when his speculative effort from the left flank skidded off the wet surface and slipped through the gloves of Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan. It was a routine save the French international should have made, but the blunder gifted Feyenoord a dream start and set the tone for an impressive performance from Paixão.
The Brazilian winger was instrumental in Feyenoord’s attacking play as the Dutch side showed no signs of disruption following the shock dismissal of Brian Priske on Monday.
Meanwhile, Benfica took a significant step towards the last 16 with a 1-0 win against 10-man Monaco.
Vangelis Pavlidis scored the decisive goal early in the second half, shortly before Moatasem Al-Musrati was sent off after receiving a second yellow card.
Benfica had previously edged Monaco 3-2 in their league-phase meeting at the Stade Louis II last November and extended their unbeaten record against the principality side in European competitions.
The return leg next Tuesday will determine which side progresses to face either Barcelona or Liverpool in the next round.
