A grenade attack at a bar in Grenoble, France, left over 10 people injured, some seriously. Authorities are investigating possible links to a settling of scores or drug trafficking, though terrorism is not suspected.

More than 10 people were wounded, some seriously, after a grenade was thrown into a bar in the city of Grenoble, France.

The incident occurred shortly after 8:00 p.m. (1900 GMT) at a bar in the Olympic Village neighborhood in the southern French city of Grenoble. A motive for the attack is not yet known, but an investigation is already underway. The neighborhood was originally built when Grenoble hosted the 1968 Winter Olympics.

"I condemn in the strongest possible terms the criminal act of unprecedented violence that took place in a shop in the Olympic Village district, which caused more than 10 injuries, several of them serious," Grenoble Mayor Eric Piolle said late on Wednesday. "I thank the rescue and security forces for their rapid intervention."

Isère Prefect Catherine Séguin stated that some of those wounded in the southeastern French city were in serious condition, according to a report from the newspaper Le Dauphiné Libéré.

"Someone came in and threw a grenade, apparently without saying a word, and ran away," Deputy Prosecutor François Touret-de-Courcy told journalists at the scene. Emergency workers had quickly cordoned off the area as authorities responded to the attack.

"There's nothing to make us think it's linked to terrorism," he said, describing the incident as an "act of extreme violence" that "may be linked to a settling of scores."

Investigators are examining a possible connection to drug trafficking, he added, noting that some accounts suggested the suspect—whose whereabouts remain unknown—was also in possession of a Kalashnikov assault rifle.

French Health Minister Yannick Neuder, who also condemned the attack in a social media post, is scheduled to visit the victims at Grenoble University Hospital on Thursday morning, according to a statement from the prefecture.

Meanwhile, French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau is set to visit Grenoble on Friday as part of an already planned trip.
