Gianluca Scamacca and Giorgio Scalvini will both undergo surgery to treat their respective injuries, ruling them out for the remainder of the season.

The pair have endured an injury-plagued campaign, with both suffering cruciate ligament ruptures in recent months.

While Scalvini made a remarkable return to action in November following a swift recovery, he has since sustained two shoulder injuries in quick succession. The latest setback necessitates surgical intervention.

Meanwhile, Scamacca’s season was effectively over after making a brief five-minute appearance in Atalanta’s last Serie A match against Torino, during which he picked up a fresh quadriceps injury. The issue has turned out to be more severe than initially expected.

Speaking ahead of Atalanta’s 1-0 defeat to Bologna in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals, director Luca Percassi confirmed the club’s decision regarding the duo’s surgeries.

“They will undergo surgery, and it is a major disappointment for us, as we are losing two key players for an extended period. They would have been of great help and did not deserve these setbacks,” Percassi told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“They will return stronger than before, and we are eagerly awaiting their comeback, even though we will not have them back until next year.”

Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini will also have to contend with the absence of Ademola Lookman, who is sidelined due to injury, while Nicolò Zaniolo has departed for Fiorentina. However, the club have reinforced their squad by signing Daniel Maldini from Monza.
