Cristiano Ronaldo marked his 40th birthday on Wednesday, showing no signs of slowing down his illustrious career.

The Portugal captain extended his record tally to 923 goals after scoring twice in Al Nassr’s 4-0 victory over Al Wasl in Monday’s Asian Champions League clash. The win also marked the 700th club triumph of his career.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, Ronaldo himself believes he has little competition for that title.

"I honestly haven’t seen anyone better than me," the Al Nassr forward told El Chiringuito TV. "I believe I am the most complete player to have ever existed. I do everything in football."

His unparalleled achievements and longevity make him a truly unique player.

Ronaldo began his professional career at Sporting CP in 2002 before joining Manchester United a year later. Over the years, he has won 33 senior trophies, including five UEFA Champions League titles—four of which came during his legendary nine-year spell at Real Madrid.

"I’m so competitive that I often forget what I’ve already achieved because it motivates me to do more and improve every year," Ronaldo said. "I think that’s what sets me apart from others. Someone else in my position might have retired 10 years ago, but I continue with the same passion. I’m different."

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner, who has also claimed two FIFA Best awards, insists he has no intention of stopping just yet.

"I could honestly end my career now and I wouldn’t have any regrets," he admitted. "But it would be a shame because I still feel great, I still make a difference. I believe I can continue for another one or two years."

The 1,000-Goal Dream

It remains to be seen whether Ronaldo will reach the incredible milestone of 1,000 career goals.

"It would be fantastic, but if it doesn’t happen, I’m already the highest goalscorer in football history," he said. "Scoring goals is the best feeling in the world and the hardest thing to do in football."

Among his many achievements, Ronaldo captained Portugal to victory at Euro 2016 and led them to the inaugural UEFA Nations League title three years later.

He is the all-time leading scorer in men’s international football with 135 goals and holds the world record for most international appearances (217). Additionally, he is the only player to have featured in six European Championships and is the tournament’s all-time top scorer with 14 goals.

A Legacy Beyond Football

Ronaldo’s influence extends far beyond the football pitch.

With more than one billion social media followers, he remains the most followed athlete in the world. He boasts 648 million followers on Instagram, 170 million on Facebook, and 114.6 million on X (formerly Twitter).

"People look up to Cristiano as an example, not just in football, but in life," Ronaldo said.

His relentless dedication and winning mentality have been key to his success, according to Al Nassr manager Stefano Pioli.

"What Cristiano has done, what he is doing, and what he will do will go down in history," Pioli said. "He takes care of his body, his preparation, and the game with an obsessive commitment—like a 20-year-old who still has everything to prove. He is a champion with an extraordinary mindset."

Ronaldo continues to break records in Saudi Arabia. Last season, he netted a record 35 goals in the Saudi Pro League and was crowned the Best Middle East Player of 2024 at the Globe Soccer Awards.

Even at 40, Ronaldo remains a force in world football, and his hunger for success shows no sign of fading.
