Two Israeli soldiers were killed, and several others were injured in a shooting incident at the Tayasir checkpoint in the occupied West Bank.

Two Israeli soldiers have been killed and several others injured in a shooting at the Tayasir checkpoint in the occupied West Bank, according to a statement from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

The IDF reported that its troops killed a gunman who opened fire at a military post near the Tayasir checkpoint.

Israeli media reports that at least eight soldiers were injured in the attack, two of them seriously.

The militant groups Hamas and the smaller Islamic Jihad also praised the attack, although neither group claimed responsibility for it.

The violence in the West Bank has surged since the ceasefire in Gaza. Israel has conducted an extensive operation in nearby Jenin over the past few weeks, aiming to suppress what it describes as militant activity in the city.

On Sunday, the Israeli army reported that it had killed at least 50 militants since launching its operation on January 21, just days after the Gaza ceasefire began on January 19.

According to the Palestinian Health Ministry in Ramallah, Israeli forces have killed 70 people in the West Bank since the start of the year.

The Israeli operation has also involved troops demolishing buildings in a refugee camp adjacent to Jenin.

On Tuesday, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) reported that the Jenin refugee camp was facing devastation. UNRWA spokesperson Juliette Touma described the situation as catastrophic, noting that large parts of the camp had been "completely destroyed in a series of detonations by the Israeli forces."
