Ireland launched their bid for a third consecutive Six Nations title with a hard-fought 27-22 bonus-point victory over England at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday.
Ireland Triumph Over England in Six Nations Blockbuster
The hosts had to come from behind after a challenging first half, but a dominant second-half display saw them take control and secure an important opening win.
England executed their game plan effectively early on, frustrating Ireland at the breakdown and taking a deserved 10-5 lead into the interval. Debutant Cadan Murley opened the scoring with a well-taken try, while Jamison Gibson-Park was the only Irish player to break through England’s defensive structure before half-time.
However, the momentum shifted dramatically in the second half. A powerful try from Bundee Aki and a penalty from Sam Prendergast put Ireland ahead for the first time after 55 minutes. Ten minutes later, Tadhg Beirne extended their advantage with a decisive score, dealing a major blow to England’s hopes.
Determined to secure a bonus point, Ireland continued to press forward, and replacement Dan Sheehan crossed the line to seal a crucial fourth try in Simon Easterby’s first match as interim head coach.
England, however, refused to leave empty-handed. Tom Curry halted Ireland’s second-half dominance with a try, and Tommy Freeman touched down in the dying moments to earn the visitors a losing bonus point.
It was a tough battle, but Ireland’s relentless intensity after the break ensured they began their title defence in victorious fashion.
