Manchester United are on the verge of securing the signing of Lecce’s Patrick Dorgu, according to the PA news agency.

Rúben Amorim’s progress since taking over as head coach in November has been somewhat hampered by the squad’s composition, with a shortage of options at left wing-back proving a key issue.

United have identified Dorgu, 20, as the solution to strengthen that area, and the talented Denmark international is edging closer to becoming the Portuguese manager’s first signing.

A deal worth an initial €30 million (£25.1m), with a further €5 million (£4.2m) in add-ons, is understood to have been largely agreed with Serie A side Lecce. Negotiations are progressing, with final details yet to be completed.

Dorgu’s arrival in England to finalise the move may not take place on Wednesday, when United travel to Bucharest for their final Europa League group-stage match against FCSB on Thursday night.

Amorim’s ability to reshape the squad has been constrained this month due to the club’s financial challenges concerning profit and sustainability regulations.

So far, the only significant outgoing has been big-money signing Antony, who joined Real Betis on loan last week for the remainder of the season.

The La Liga club are covering at least 84 per cent of his wages, with additional potential bonuses included in the agreement, though there is no option for a permanent transfer.

Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford, Casemiro, and Alejandro Garnacho are among those whose futures remain uncertain as the transfer deadline approaches on Monday.
