Manchester United have authorised the loan departure of Ethan Wheatley, with Antony also poised to complete his temporary move to Real Betis.
Manchester United Finalise Two January Deals as Latest Loan Move Confirmed
Teenage striker Wheatley will spend the remainder of the 2024/25 season at Walsall, having sealed his move to the Bescot Stadium on Saturday morning.
This marks Wheatley’s first loan spell away from Old Trafford. The Stockport-born forward, a graduate of United’s esteemed youth academy, made his senior debut against Sheffield United last April and featured in three Premier League matches as a substitute under Erik ten Hag, including a notable appearance against Arsenal.
A regular for United’s Under-21 side, Wheatley has also gained experience against senior opposition in this season’s EFL Trophy. In addition, he appeared briefly under interim first-team manager Ruud van Nistelrooy during United’s emphatic 5-2 victory over Leicester City in the Carabao Cup last October.
The 19-year-old now aims to establish himself in senior football with League Two leaders Walsall. The Saddlers, managed by Mat Sadler, currently sit 12 points clear at the top of the table, with a 15-point cushion over the play-off contenders. They are enjoying a record-breaking run of nine consecutive league wins, having defeated MK Dons 4-2 last weekend.
Wheatley could make his debut in Saturday’s lunchtime clash against Bradford City at Valley Parade and may also feature in Tuesday’s fixture away to Fleetwood Town.
Expressing his excitement about the move, Wheatley told Walsall’s official website:
“It’s my first loan, so I’m very excited to get started. The club is top of the league, so I’m joining a winning environment. I’m looking forward to helping the team achieve great things for the rest of the season.
“There was interest from other clubs, but Walsall offered more opportunities for game time, which is crucial for me as I aim to make my mark in men’s football. Manchester United has prepared us well with work experience loans, so I feel ready to settle in and do my best here.”
Head coach Mat Sadler shared his enthusiasm about the signing:
“I’ve admired Ethan for a long time. He’s quick, physically strong, and has a hunger for goals. He fits perfectly into our philosophy, and I’m excited to work with him on his first loan spell.
“We’ve been patient to secure this move, and I’m grateful to Manchester United for trusting us with Ethan’s development. I’m looking forward to seeing what he can achieve during his time with us.”
Meanwhile, Antony is expected to follow Wheatley in completing a loan move. The Brazilian winger, who arrived in Seville on Friday, is set to join La Liga side Real Betis until the end of the season.
Speaking upon his arrival, Antony said, “I’m so happy, I’m ready,” as reported by Fabrizio Romano.
Antony, who was an unused substitute during United’s dramatic Europa League victory over Rangers on Thursday, will spend the remainder of the campaign in Spain. However, the loan deal does not include an option or obligation for a permanent transfer, meaning the 24-year-old is expected to return to Old Trafford in the summer.
