Somali President Arrives in Egypt for Talks with President Sisi
Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived in Egypt on Thursday for an official visit to meet with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. The visit, as reported by the official Somali news agency SONNA, follows an invitation from the Egyptian president and aims to discuss strengthening joint efforts in combating terrorism and accelerating cooperation in the fields of security and peace in the region.
Both countries have emphasized the importance of boosting opportunities for economic and developmental cooperation. During a previous visit to Cairo in August, President Mohamud and Egypt signed a defense pact to enhance bilateral security cooperation.
In the first half of 2024, trade between Somalia and Egypt reached $59 million, an 88% increase from $31 million during the same period in 2023, according to Egypt’s statistics authority.
