A Tom Seabrook hat-trick helped Northampton Saints secure a thrilling 34-32 victory over Munster Rugby in the Investec Champions Cup, guaranteeing them a home knockout clash in the next round.
Match Report: Northampton Saints 34-32 Munster Rugby
Saints scored five tries in their final European pool stage match, with Seabrook claiming a remarkable treble, Curtis Langdon crossing in the first half, and James Ramm dotting down in the second. This victory saw Northampton top Pool 3.
Munster held a slender lead at half-time, having benefitted from an early brace by Calvin Nash and a penalty from Jack Crowley. Although Diarmuid Kilgallen added two more tries in the second half, Seabrook’s third try proved decisive for the hosts.
First Half: Saints in the Ascendancy
Saints immediately piled the pressure on Munster, but it wasn’t until the 13th minute that they broke through. Seabrook exploited a gap on the left wing to score the opening try.
However, Saints’ joy was short-lived as Nash displayed individual brilliance by sending a grubber kick through, chasing it down, and diving over to score Munster’s first try. Crowley’s conversion put Munster ahead by two points, and they extended their advantage to five shortly after, when Saints were penalised for being offside at the breakdown, and Crowley sent the penalty between the posts.
Nash added a second try on the half-hour mark, as Munster constructed a series of phases in Saints’ 22 to open space for the winger. However, Munster were reduced to 14 men for the final play of the half when Gavin Coombes was shown a yellow card for repeated infringements.
Saints made sure to have the final say of the half, driving a maul forward from the resulting line-out, and Langdon dotted down at the base to send the teams into the break at 12-15 in Munster’s favour.
Second Half: Drama Unfolds
Saints reclaimed the lead just 10 minutes into the second half, with Seabrook claiming his second try after sustained pressure from Northampton.
The Saints’ forwards soon got the maul rolling again, and in the 54th minute, Alex Mitchell fed the ball out left, where Fin Smith passed it to a charging Ramm, who sprinted over the line to score.
Crowley and Smith exchanged penalties on the hour mark, and Munster closed the gap to just two points when Kilgallen powered through a gap in the Saints’ defensive line to score.
However, Saints responded quickly, with Seabrook completing his hat-trick after slicing through the Munster line unopposed. Smith’s conversion made it 34-25 to Northampton, and the hosts appeared to be in control.
But Munster were not finished. Ramm hacked through a gap in the Saints defence and won the race to the ball, but Munster’s defence held firm. The away side applied increasing pressure, eventually allowing Kilgallen to cross for a second try after building phases inside the Saints’ 22.
Crowley’s successful conversion brought the deficit back to just two points with a minute remaining, but a key turnover from Henry Pollock in the final moments allowed Saints to hold on for victory.
Northampton’s win secures them a home Round of 16 tie in the next phase of the Investec Champions Cup, with their opposition to be confirmed after the conclusion of Round 4 matches.
Before then, Saints will return to Gallagher Premiership action, facing Harlequins away at Twickenham Stoop.
