The Premier League has clarified why Kai Havertz’s late goal for Arsenal was disallowed during their match against Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium.
Premier League Explains Why Kai Havertz's Late Goal for Arsenal Was Disallowed
Arsenal appeared to be in control at one point, but two second-half goals from Aston Villa completely turned the tide. Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins found the back of the net, helping Unai Emery’s side secure a hard-fought victory and dampening Arsenal’s hopes.
The Controversial Incident
Late in the match, a shot deflected off Havertz and into the net, sparking celebrations from Arsenal players and fans who believed the goal was legitimate. However, the referee halted play, and after a VAR review, the goal was disallowed.
The Premier League later issued a statement on their official X (formerly Twitter) account, explaining the decision. The statement read:
“The Arsenal goal was awarded on-field. The VAR established that the ball hit Havertz’s arm immediately before entering the goal and recommended that the goal be disallowed.”
Arsenal's Struggles in the Second Half
Arsenal’s inability to convert chances in the second half proved costly, as their defensive lapses and lack of finishing left them dropping two vital points in the Premier League title race.
In contrast, Liverpool capitalised on their opportunities, with two late goals from Darwin Núñez consolidating their position as title contenders.
The Gunners’ lack of squad depth was evident, as their only attacking reinforcement from the bench was Raheem Sterling. This deficiency has prompted Arsenal to seek reinforcements in the January transfer window, with Viktor Gyökeres of Sporting Lisbon and Yoane Wissa of Brentford reportedly on their radar.
Arsenal must address these shortcomings to maintain their title ambitions as the season progresses.
