Newcastle United and Aston Villa, along with Newcastle assistant head coach Jason Tindall and Villa’s lead analyst Victor Manas, have been charged in connection with a "mass confrontation" that occurred during their Boxing Day clash at St James' Park.

The incident unfolded in the tunnel at half-time of last month’s Premier League fixture, resulting in Tindall and Manas both being sent off. Broadcasters with access to the scene described it as a "20-man melee."

The match itself saw Newcastle dominate, with Anthony Gordon opening the scoring before Villa striker Jhon Duran was sent off 13 minutes before half-time. Second-half goals from Alexander Isak and Joelinton secured a 3-0 victory for Newcastle in what was a tempestuous encounter.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Football Association (FA) said:

"Newcastle, Aston Villa, Jason Tindall, and Victor Manas have been charged following a mass confrontation during the Premier League fixture on Thursday, 26 December 2024.

"It is alleged that during the half-time interval, both clubs failed to ensure that their players and/or technical area occupants behaved in a manner that was neither improper nor provocative within the tunnel area.

"It is also alleged that during the same incident, the Newcastle assistant manager and Aston Villa analyst acted in an improper manner."

Both clubs and individuals have been given until Monday to respond to the charges.

Villa’s Jhon Duran had already been charged with improper conduct for his behaviour following his dismissal during the match. The 21-year-old Colombian was shown a straight red card for allegedly stamping on Newcastle defender Fabian Schar.

Duran reacted furiously to the decision, protesting vehemently and requiring assistance to leave the pitch. His frustration was evident as he kicked out at a water bottle on his way off.

The FA's investigation into the events surrounding this fiery encounter continues, with potential repercussions for both clubs and individuals involved.
