Japan's Hideki Matsuyama delivered a masterclass performance at The Sentry, the PGA Tour's season opener, with a stunning final-round score of 8-under-par 65 to secure victory on Sunday at The Plantation Course in Kapalua, Hawaii.
Hideki Matsuyama Sets PGA Tour Scoring Record with Victory at The Sentry
Matsuyama finished with an extraordinary 35-under-par 257, setting a new record for the lowest 72-hole score to par in PGA Tour history. His dominant performance earned him a three-stroke victory over runner-up Collin Morikawa, who carded a 67 in the final round.
This marks Matsuyama’s 11th career PGA Tour title and follows two tournament wins last year.
The highlight of Matsuyama's round came on the par-4 third hole, where he holed out for an eagle, his ball taking a couple of bounces before dropping into the cup. This impressive shot extended his lead to three strokes. Despite a bogey on the par-4 seventh, only his second bogey of the tournament, Matsuyama carried a four-shot advantage into the back nine.
Morikawa narrowed the gap to two strokes with a birdie on the 15th hole, but Matsuyama responded decisively with a birdie on the 16th, maintaining his composure to close out the victory.
The 32-year-old, who will turn 33 next month, seized the lead during Friday's second round and never looked back. His consistent scoring over the weekend (65 and 62 on Friday and Saturday) left him one shot ahead of Morikawa heading into the final round.
South Korea’s Sungjae Im finished third at 29 under after a final-round 65, while Venezuela’s Jhonattan Vegas secured fourth place with the same score at 25 under.
Belgium's Thomas Detry (71), Sweden's Ludvig Åberg (64), and Canada’s Corey Conners (67) shared fifth place at 24 under.
Canada’s Taylor Pendrith achieved a milestone with the first albatross in the 27-year history of the tournament, thanks to a brilliant 2 on the par-5 fifth hole. Pendrith shot 67 for the second consecutive day, finishing tied for 13th at 22 under, though a double-bogey on the 17th slightly dampened his round.
Notably, all 58 golfers who completed the tournament finished with scores of 3 under par or better, underscoring the exceptional standard of play at The Sentry.
