Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has challenged former Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish to improve his performances after the winger lost his place in the starting line-up to the rising Brazilian star, Savinho. Despite City's underwhelming start to the season, Grealish has struggled to secure a regular spot in Guardiola's side, owing to inconsistent form and ongoing fitness issues.

The England international, once a key figure in City's treble-winning campaign, has not been able to replicate the vibrancy of his previous performances. Addressing Grealish's situation, Guardiola delivered a candid message: "It’s simple. The more he reflects on himself, the clearer he will see the competition. He has to compete."

Guardiola highlighted Savinho's current form as the reason for the change: "Savinho is in better shape than Jack, which is why I’ve selected him. It’s about performance. Do I want the Jack who helped win the treble? Absolutely. But I must be honest with myself and the team."

He went on to praise Savinho’s contributions, emphasising his quality: "Look at Savinho’s delivery in the box – it’s superior to the other wingers in that position." Guardiola also laid down a challenge to Grealish, stating: "Players have to fight for their place. If they think it’s unfair, fine, but they must prove themselves. Competing every day, every week, and every month is the only way."

Grealish, who joined Manchester City for a record £100 million in the summer of 2021, has enjoyed significant success, winning three Premier League titles, the FA Cup, and the Champions League. However, both he and the team have endured a difficult campaign, with City suffering nine defeats in 13 matches towards the end of 2024.

Meanwhile, 20-year-old Savinho has emerged as a standout performer. Guardiola commended the young Brazilian, stating: "I fought hard to bring him here. He’s showing exactly why I had so much belief in him. I keep pushing him, saying, ‘Do it again and again.’ His performances have earned him his place."

The City manager also lauded Savinho’s recent displays: "Against Everton, he was brilliant. Then he scored against Leicester, and last weekend he contributed a goal and two outstanding assists. That’s top-level football, and that’s why he’s playing."

Savinho, in turn, has expressed gratitude for the faith his teammates have shown in him. "I’ve been here six months, and I’m still adapting," he admitted. "I don’t speak English yet, but I believe once I do, I’ll feel more comfortable within the group. What matters most is that my teammates trust me, and I aim to repay that trust on the pitch."

Reflecting on his journey, Savinho added: "I didn’t expect to make an impact so quickly, but I’ve worked hard every day, and when I get the chance, I make sure to show my talent."

With Guardiola emphasising competition and Savinho making the most of his opportunities, the pressure is now on Grealish to prove he can reclaim his spot in City’s starting XI.
