South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is facing an arrest warrant on charges of insurrection. If arrested, he would become the first sitting president in South Korea's history to face such a situation.
South Korea Seeks Arrest of Impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol
South Korean investigators arrived in Seoul on Friday to execute an arrest warrant for impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol. However, Yonhap news agency reported that they encountered resistance upon arrival.
The investigators attempted to enter the presidential residence but were confronted by heavy security barricades. According to Yonhap, their entry was further hindered by a military unit stationed inside the compound. After overcoming this obstacle, they faced opposition from the Presidential Security Service, which continued to protect the impeached president.
In response to the investigators’ presence, Yoon’s lawyer, Yoon Kap-keun, argued that their actions were unlawful, asserting that the warrant was "illegal and invalid." He further stated that legal measures would be pursued to contest the execution of the warrant. "The execution of a warrant that is illegal and invalid is indeed not lawful," Yoon Kap-keun said, adding, "Legal actions will be taken regarding the illegal execution of the warrant."
Meanwhile, hundreds of Yoon's supporters gathered at his residence, seeking to obstruct the investigators.
The arrest warrant was issued by a Seoul court on Tuesday after President Yoon failed to attend multiple requests for questioning and blocked searches of his offices in the South Korean capital. Authorities are investigating whether Yoon's brief declaration of martial law on December 3 constituted rebellion.
If arrested, Yoon would become the first sitting president in South Korean history to be detained.
The embattled president vowed to "fight until the end" while facing the threat of arrest. Supporters, who had assembled on Thursday to protest the warrant, camped overnight and chanted "illegal warrant is invalid" as the investigators and media gathered outside the presidential residence.
On Thursday, Yoon addressed his supporters, declaring, "I will fight until the end to protect this country together with you."
The Presidential Security Service continues to protect Yoon as the sitting head of state and has previously blocked police attempts to raid the residence.
