Nigeria's foreign ministry has also urged Nigerians living in some Australian cities to be vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
Nigeria Urges Caution for Citizens in Australia Over Discrimination and Hate Crimes
Nigeria has advised its citizens traveling to or residing in Australia to exercise caution due to reports of discrimination and verbal abuse targeting foreigners in the country.
The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed concern over a "recent surge" in hate crimes, including Islamophobia, in Australia. The ministry emphasized the importance of increased vigilance and taking necessary precautions, particularly for Nigerians in certain Australian cities.
The advisory stated: "Nigerians are therefore advised to be mindful of the prevailing cultural and social dynamics to ensure their safety and comfort."
The warning follows high-profile incidents that have prompted Australian authorities to pledge a crackdown on hate crimes. The country has seen an increase in such incidents since the onset of Israel's war on Gaza in October 2023.
According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, the war has claimed the lives of approximately 45,500 Palestinians, with over half of the victims being women and children. An additional 11,000 people are reported missing.
In light of these developments, Nigeria has urged its nationals in Australia to report any instances of racism or harassment to the Nigerian High Commission in Canberra, the nation's capital.
