Several people intervened to stop the suspect after he began stabbing individuals in Berlin's Charlottenburg neighborhood, according to a report by a local Berlin newspaper.
Several Injured in Berlin Knife Attack as Bystanders Subdue Suspect
Several people were injured in a suspected knife attack in Berlin's Charlottenburg district, police in the German capital reported on Tuesday.
According to a police spokeswoman, the incident occurred on a street in the western part of the city. Emergency services were alerted shortly before 12 p.m. local time (11:00 UTC/GMT).
Police posted on X (formerly Twitter) that they suspect a knife was used during the New Year's Eve attack.
The Berliner Morgenpost reported that the attack began inside a supermarket at the corner of Quedlinburger Strasse before spilling outside. Meanwhile, the Berliner Zeitung (BZ) described the incident, stating that the suspect "stabbed wildly" before being subdued by several passers-by who overpowered him until the police arrived.
Two individuals were hospitalized as a result of the attack, and the suspect was arrested. However, police have not confirmed the total number of injuries.
Authorities said there is no immediate indication that the attack was terrorist-motivated. The BZ noted that the suspect is believed to have mental health issues, though this has not been officially confirmed by the police.
A police spokeswoman emphasized that the investigation remains in its early stages.
The incident comes as Germany remains on high alert following a recent deadly attack at a Christmas market in Magdeburg earlier this month, which claimed the lives of five people and injured more than 200 others.
In preparation for New Year's Eve celebrations at Berlin's Brandenburg Gate, city authorities have deployed 4,000 police officers and 1,500 firefighters.
