Bangkok Hotel Fire Kills 3 Tourists
A fire at a hotel in Bangkok has claimed the lives of at least three foreign tourists, authorities in Thailand reported. Local police confirmed the incident, stating that seven other tourists, including two Germans, were injured, mostly from smoke inhalation.
The blaze broke out on Sunday evening on the fifth floor of the six-story Ember Hotel, located in Bangkok’s popular Khao San Road area. Emergency services confirmed that 75 people were staying at the hotel at the time. Firefighters quickly responded, using three ladder trucks to rescue guests trapped inside or on the hotel’s rooftop. They managed to contain the fire within an hour.
Police Colonel Sanong Saengmanee reported that all the victims were foreign tourists. One of the victims was found dead at the scene, while the other two succumbed to their injuries after being rushed to the hospital.
The Khao San Road area, known for its vibrant atmosphere, is a hotspot for backpackers. In response to the fire, Bangkok's Governor Chadchart Sittipunt ordered the temporary closure of the hotel, and an investigation into the cause of the blaze is underway.
Despite the tragedy, preparations for Bangkok’s New Year celebrations are proceeding, with 20,000 people expected at a countdown event on Tuesday night. The Khao San Road Business Association assured that security measures are in place, with over 150 police and district staff scheduled to cover the area.
