Derby County face a fitness race for two important players ahead of Leeds United's visit to Pride Park on Sunday, while Premier League loanee David Ozoh has been officially ruled out.
Derby County Rule Out Premier League Midfielder for Leeds United Clash and Face Fitness Concerns Over Two Key Players
Daniel Farke’s Leeds side head into the match knowing that a victory will ensure they finish 2024 at the top of the Championship table. Their Boxing Day triumph over Stoke City saw them overtake Sheffield United, who fell to a 2-0 defeat against Burnley.
Derby, meanwhile, boosted their survival hopes with a crucial 2-1 victory over promotion contenders West Bromwich Albion on Boxing Day. Manager Paul Warne remains eager to strengthen his squad for the challenge against Leeds but will be without Crystal Palace loanee Ozoh, who continues to recover from a long-term injury.
Midfield Options in Doubt
Midfielders Liam Thompson and Ben Osborn are both in contention to return after missing the West Brom match, with Warne cautiously optimistic about their availability.
"Ben tweaked his glute on Christmas Eve, but we’re hopeful, though perhaps not overly optimistic, that he’ll be able to play some part at the weekend," Warne explained to Derbyshire Live. "It’s a similar situation with Thommo. We were hoping he would be back. At the moment, we’ve got three central midfielders out, which is far from ideal."
Despite Ozoh’s continued absence, Warne remains committed to the player’s recovery and has no immediate plans to terminate his loan.
"I don’t think we’re at that point yet," Warne said. "I’ve been impressed with what David brought to the team, even though it feels like it was such a long time ago. I really feel for him because he’s absolutely devastated.
"We need to get him fit and then match-ready. It’s a lengthy process, almost like starting pre-season all over again. It’s something we’re keeping a close eye on, but hopefully, there’ll be some positive news on David soon."
Leeds United Eye Championship Summit
Leeds United will look to repeat their comfortable 2-0 victory over Derby at Elland Road in November. A win on Sunday will guarantee them top spot in the Championship table, regardless of other results.
Elsewhere in the league, Sheffield United host West Brom in the early kick-off on Sunday, while Burnley travel to Middlesbrough for the 8pm fixture.
