21 Killed in Mozambique Protests Following Election Ruling
At least 21 people have lost their lives in the ongoing unrest following Mozambique's top court's confirmation of the long-ruling party Frelimo's victory in the recent elections, according to the country's Interior Minister, Pascoal Ronda. The announcement was made late on Tuesday.
The Constitutional Council's decision on Monday triggered fresh protests nationwide, led by opposition groups and their supporters, who claim the elections were marred by fraud.
As of now, 78 individuals have been arrested in connection with the protests, and authorities have heightened security measures across the country. Speaking to the public broadcaster TVM, Minister Ronda stated, "The armed and defense force will increase its presence in critical and key points."
Frelimo has faced repeated accusations from opposition parties and election observers of vote rigging, allegations it has consistently denied.
