Wales, who secured their place at Euro 2025 by defeating the Republic of Ireland in a play-off, have been drawn into a challenging group alongside defending champions England, top seeds France, and 2017 winners the Netherlands for the tournament in Switzerland next summer.
Euro 2025 Draw: Wales Face Tough Group Against France, England, and the Netherlands
Group D has been dubbed the "group of death," as it features the past two champions and sets up an intriguing clash for England’s head coach, Sarina Wiegman, against her native country, the Netherlands. Two teams from each group will progress to the quarter-finals.
Elsewhere, reigning world champions Spain avoided similarly formidable opponents and were drawn into a group with Portugal, Belgium, and Italy. Germany, eight-time winners of the competition, will face a difficult group that includes Denmark, runners-up in 2017, and Sweden, semi-finalists in 2022.
England, who won the European Championship for the first time in 2022 on home soil, will be aiming to retain their title. Wiegman, who also guided the Netherlands to victory in 2017, is seeking her third consecutive Euro title as a manager. She has led her teams to four consecutive major tournament finals, including two successive World Cup finals.
Wales, under the leadership of head coach Rhian Wilkinson, made history by qualifying for their first-ever major women’s tournament after defeating Ireland 3-2 on aggregate.
The host nation, Switzerland, were seeded alongside Spain, France, and Germany in the top pot for the draw, ensuring they avoided meeting those teams at the group stage.
Meanwhile, UEFA announced a significant increase in the tournament’s prize fund, with €41 million allocated for Euro 2025 — more than double the €16 million from the 2022 competition, which had been postponed by a year due to the pandemic. For the first time, between 30% and 40% of each participating nation’s prize money will be distributed directly to the players.
The tournament will take place from 2nd to 27th July 2025, with matches played across eight venues in Switzerland.
