Authorities in the southern states of India have issued warnings as Cyclone Fengal is expected to bring further heavy rainfall.

Parts of southern India were grappling with the aftermath of Cyclone Fengal on Tuesday, while northern Kerala was placed on red alert, and schools in the city of Puducherry were closed as a precautionary measure.

As of the latest reports from local newspaper The Hindu, the cyclone has claimed at least 12 lives in Tamil Nadu. The storm also caused widespread devastation in Sri Lanka last week.

The cyclone submerged over 200,000 hectares (494,210 acres) of farmland, and more than 2,400 huts were damaged due to the heavy rainfall. At least 14 districts in Tamil Nadu remain severely affected.

Schools in parts of southern India were closed, and weather officials issued warnings on Monday, cautioning that there is still a risk of flash flooding. Cyclone Fengal made landfall in Tamil Nadu on Saturday, bringing the highest 24-hour rainfall in 30 years to the city of Puducherry. By Monday morning, however, the cyclone had weakened into a normal low-pressure system.

In response to the ongoing situation, authorities have issued a red alert in Kerala, anticipating heavy rainfall throughout Tuesday.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin, offering his full support to the state. In turn, Stalin requested an immediate interim relief of Rs 20 billion (€224 million, $236 million) from the National Disaster Relief Fund, citing the "unprecedented" destruction caused by the cyclone, according to a Times of India report.
