Javier Mascherano has been appointed as the new manager of Inter Miami, succeeding Gerardo Martino, who stepped down from the role at Chase Stadium citing "personal reasons."
Javier Mascherano Reunites with Lionel Messi as David Beckham Welcomes Inter Miami's New Manager: ‘An Honour for Me’
The former Liverpool and Barcelona midfielder continues the club's trend of hiring coaches familiar with Lionel Messi, Inter Miami’s star player. Mascherano takes charge during Major League Soccer's off-season, looking to build on the team’s recent successes.
Under Martino’s guidance, Miami, part-owned by David Beckham, topped both the Eastern Conference and the overall MLS standings, earning qualification for next summer’s inaugural FIFA Club World Cup. They finished eight points clear of second-placed Columbus Crew but suffered a shock exit in the opening round of the MLS Cup. Atlanta United defeated Miami 3-2 in the decisive match of their best-of-three series. Messi scored a crucial equaliser at Chase Stadium in the 65th minute, but Bartosz Slisz’s winner secured Atlanta’s progression.
Mascherano’s appointment has been warmly welcomed by Beckham, who described the Argentine as "one of the world’s best players" during his playing days.
"Throughout his illustrious career, both as one of the greatest players and an experienced coach, Javier has demonstrated relentless determination, coupled with exceptional knowledge, instincts, and understanding," Beckham said.
"We are thrilled to welcome him to lead our team and guide us towards continued success."
Mascherano joins Inter Miami after stepping down as manager of Argentina's Under-20 side, a role he held during the Paris 2024 Olympics, where Argentina were eliminated in the first knockout round by hosts France, with Jean-Philippe Mateta scoring the decisive goal.
Speaking about his new role, Mascherano said:
"To lead a club like Inter Miami is both an honour and a privilege, and I am determined to make the most of this opportunity.
"I was drawn to the club's undeniable ambition and the infrastructure it has in place to achieve its goals.
"I look forward to working alongside everyone at Inter Miami to take the club to new heights and to create unforgettable moments for the fans."
The 39-year-old will now aim to build on the foundations laid by his predecessor as Inter Miami continue their pursuit of domestic and international success.
