The police spokesperson stated that the incident occurred on Wednesday at Effurun, in the Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.

According to AFP, the spokesperson for the Delta State Police, SP Bright Edafe, has confirmed the death of two robbery suspects in the state.

Mr. Edafe made this statement to journalists on Tuesday in Warri, revealing that the suspects were killed by gunfire from their own gang members.

The incident took place on Wednesday in Effurun, located in the Uvwie Local Government Area of the state.

Mr. Edafe explained that the two deceased suspects were leading a police surveillance team, which was attached to the Ekpan Division, to their hideout when they were caught in a shootout. He detailed that the suspects were arrested at the Effurun roundabout, in possession of a bag containing 57 live cartridges, along with other items. The suspects were guiding the police team to their hideout on the Warri/Sapele road when their gang members, upon spotting the police vehicle, opened fire. During the ensuing gunfight, the two suspects who were leading the police were critically wounded by gunshots fired by their own colleagues. The injured suspects were rushed to the hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment.

Mr. Edafe further mentioned that several items were recovered from the hideout of the criminals, including one English pump action gun, one locally made cut-to-size gun, and eight live cartridges. Additionally, six iPhones, other smartphones, and a Rolex wristwatch were seized.

He also stated that the police command had intensified efforts to apprehend the remaining members of the gang who managed to flee.
