Jamie Carragher has criticised Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah for comments regarding his future following Sunday’s 3-2 victory over Southampton.
‘Very Disappointed’ Jamie Carragher Criticises Mohamed Salah After Liverpool Contract Revelation
Salah, who scored twice to help Liverpool come from behind at St Mary’s, admitted after the match that he has not yet received an offer from the club about a new contract. With just over six months left on his current deal, concerns are growing that the 32-year-old could leave next summer.
“Well, we are almost in December, and I haven’t received any offers yet to stay at the club, [so] I’m probably more out than in,” Salah admitted. “You know I’ve been at the club for many years. There’s no club like this. But in the end, it’s not in my hands. As I said before, it’s December, and I haven’t received anything yet about my future.”
Carragher, however, criticised the Egyptian for his remarks, suggesting that Salah’s focus should be on Liverpool’s upcoming fixtures, including Wednesday’s crucial Champions League clash against Real Madrid.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Carragher said: “I am very disappointed with Mo Salah. That interview last night after the game, and it comes out today... Liverpool have got Real Madrid midweek and Manchester City at the weekend. That is the story for Liverpool right now.
“And Mo Salah, we are all quite aware – certainly the local reporters in Liverpool are – that in the seven years he has been at the football club, he has stopped in the mixed zone twice. Which is his right, which is absolutely fine, but he decided to stop for the third time away at Southampton on the back of winning Liverpool the game and putting that out.
“Now, the most important thing for Liverpool this season is not the future of Salah, not the future of Virgil van Dijk, and it’s not the future of Trent Alexander-Arnold. The most important thing is Liverpool winning the Premier League – that is more important than any of those players.”
Salah has been in excellent form this season, scoring 10 goals in 12 Premier League matches. His brace against Southampton puts him second in the league’s top scorers list, trailing only Erling Haaland, who has 12 goals.
