Inter Milan surged to the top of Serie A on Saturday with a dominant first-half display, thrashing a hapless Verona 5-0 to go two points clear at the summit. Meanwhile, Juventus and AC Milan played out a lacklustre goalless draw.

Simone Inzaghi's men temporarily overtook Napoli at the top of the table after scoring all five of their goals in a remarkable first-half blitz at the Stadio Bentegodi. Marcus Thuram netted twice, while Joaquin Correa, Stefan de Vrij, and Yann Bisseck added their names to the scoresheet.

Atalanta could reclaim the top spot with a victory over promoted Parma in Saturday's late fixture, while Napoli are set to host Roma on Sunday in Claudio Ranieri's return to Serie A management.

Correa opened the scoring in the 17th minute with a delightful chip following a clever exchange with Thuram. The goal ended the Argentine's two-year wait for a Serie A strike and set the tone for an emphatic performance.

The 30-year-old Correa, who had only played 38 minutes in the league this season before the match, was outstanding in the absence of captain Lautaro Martinez, who was sidelined with the flu. Correa not only struck the woodwork twice but also provided the assist for Thuram's first goal. The French forward scored two almost identical goals within three minutes, skilfully rounding Verona goalkeeper Lorenzo Montipò on both occasions.

Further goals from defenders De Vrij and Bisseck, the latter again assisted by Correa, completed the rout, leaving the home fans furious. Chants of "show some fight" echoed around the stadium as Verona supporters vented their frustration. The hosts, who have now lost nine of their 13 league matches this season, sit precariously in 14th place, just three points above the relegation zone.

Inter, meanwhile, look ahead to their Champions League clash against Leipzig on Tuesday, with hopes of securing direct qualification to the knockout stages. Saturday's victory was even more impressive given the absence of key players, including Martinez, Hakan Çalhanoğlu, Federico Dimarco, and Benjamin Pavard, who were either rested or sidelined following international duty.

Juventus and AC Milan Share the Spoils in Drab Encounter

At the San Siro, Juventus and AC Milan produced little to excite the 75,000-strong crowd, settling for a 0-0 draw that underscored the challenges facing both sides. Juventus, plagued by injuries—including to their star striker Dušan Vlahović—fielded an improvised line-up with midfielder Teun Koopmeiners deployed as a makeshift forward.

Despite their depleted squad, Juventus managed more shots on target than their hosts, registering two compared to Milan's solitary effort. However, neither side created any clear-cut chances in a match lacking intensity and quality.

AC Milan, starting with former Juventus forward Álvaro Morata leading their attack, failed to break down the visitors' defence. Their only significant attempt came in stoppage time when Theo Hernández directed a weak header straight at Juventus goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio, moments before the final whistle.

The draw leaves Juventus in sixth place, three points behind Inter, while AC Milan are seventh, nine points adrift of their city rivals with a game in hand. Both teams will need to regroup as they aim to revitalise their respective campaigns in the weeks ahead.
