Liverpool Forward Diogo Jota Dies in Car Crash Days After Wedding

Spanish newspaper Marca reports that the 28-year-old was travelling with his brother, Andre, in the Sanabria area of the Zamora region when the fatal crash occurred. Eyewitnesses at the scene stated that the vehicle veered off the road and became engulfed in flames.
Emergency services in the Castilla y León region confirmed the incident in an official statement:
“The 1-1-2 Castilla y León operations room received several calls reporting a vehicle accident at kilometre 65 of the A-52 motorway, in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora. A vehicle had reportedly crashed and was on fire.
“Emergency services notified the Zamora Traffic Police, the Zamora Provincial Council Fire Brigade, and the Sacyl Emergency Coordination Centre (CCU). A Medical Emergency Unit (UME) and Primary Care Medical Staff from the Mombuey Health Centre were dispatched and, upon arrival, confirmed the deaths of two individuals at the scene.”
Jota, who joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 for £45 million, was enjoying the final days of his summer holiday before returning to Merseyside for pre-season training. The devastating news comes just days after he married his long-term partner, Rute Cardoso, in a ceremony held in Porto on 22 June.
In a heartfelt social media post, the couple shared: “22 June 2025. Yes to forever.” The pair had been together since 2012 and were engaged for three years prior to their wedding.
Jota recently added to his list of honours by lifting the UEFA Nations League trophy with Portugal, capping off an exceptional season. That international success came shortly after Arne Slot's Liverpool side cruised to the Premier League title.
Known for his versatility, sharp finishing, and relentless work rate, Jota had become one of the Premier League’s standout forwards in recent years. After rising to prominence at Wolves, he went on to make 120 appearances for Liverpool, becoming a key figure in the club’s attacking line-up.
The news of his untimely passing has sent shockwaves through the football world, with tributes expected to pour in from across the sporting community and beyond.
