Chelsea have secured their place in the quarter-finals of the Women’s Champions League with a commanding 3-0 victory over Celtic in their latest Group B encounter at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night. The result ensures progression with two matches still to play.
Chelsea Cruise Past Celtic to Secure Women's Champions League Quarter-Final Spot
An early volley from Lucy Bronze set the tone for a dominant performance in west London. Dutch teenager Wieke Kaptein added a second with a powerful header before Eve Perisset rounded off the win with a stoppage-time penalty.
Sonia Bompastor, Chelsea's manager, had called for a quick start, and her side delivered emphatically, taking the lead within just 65 seconds. A short corner led to Catarina Macario delivering a deep cross to the far post, where Bronze hooked in a volley. While the England right-back’s strike lacked power, Celtic goalkeeper Kelsey Daugherty could only parry it into the net.
It was a disastrous start for the Scottish champions, still searching for their first point in their maiden group-stage campaign. Although Celtic managed to stabilise briefly with neat spells of possession, they struggled to create meaningful chances.
Chelsea doubled their lead in the 25th minute, again capitalising on a set piece. Guro Reiten’s inviting delivery from a corner was met by Kaptein, who powered a header past Daugherty to leave the visitors with a mountain to climb.
Bompastor, who made six changes to the side that defeated Manchester City 2-0 at the weekend, utilised the depth of her squad at half-time. Colombia's in-form forward Mayra Ramirez replaced Macario, who continues to build match fitness following her return from injury.
Chelsea remained on the front foot in the second half, with Kaptein and Maelys Mpome narrowly missing the target from long-range efforts. Reiten also came close, only for her shot to be cleared off the line by Kelly Clark.
Kaptein squandered a golden opportunity to score her second, heading Bronze’s cross straight at Daugherty. Millie Bright saw her header blocked from yet another corner, and Emma Lawton bravely denied Reiten’s fierce drive.
Ramirez almost added her name to the scoresheet, narrowly failing to connect with Ashley Lawrence’s cross at the near post. As the match wound down, 17-year-old Lola Brown made her senior debut, marking another highlight for Chelsea.
In the dying moments, Bronze embarked on a mazy run into the box, with her cross striking the arm of Celtic's Shannon McGregor. Perisset confidently converted the resulting penalty, sealing a comprehensive victory for the Blues and adding a finishing flourish to an already satisfying evening.
With two games still remaining in Group B, Chelsea have firmly stamped their authority and look well-prepared to challenge for European glory.
