It’s not uncommon for a political campaign to accumulate debt, especially during an intense election season. What stands out in the case of Kamala Harris' campaign, however, are the dramatic internal conflicts and tensions that have surfaced, creating an atmosphere of turmoil both within her team and in the broader political landscape surrounding her.
Clashes, Confusion, and Secrecy Overwhelm Harris Campaign's Finances
Kamala Harris’ campaign was once celebrated for its remarkable fundraising success, breaking records by crossing the $1 billion mark in a remarkably short time. However, less than a week after the vice president conceded the election, her campaign is in dire financial straits, with no clear path forward. Despite the lack of funds, the campaign continues to solicit contributions.
"Hi Team, It’s Kamala. The election isn’t what we wanted, but I will never give up the fight," a text sent out on Tuesday reads. "And right now, there are still a number of critical races across the country that are either too close to call or within the margin of recounts or certain legal challenges."
According to two campaign officials, the funds requested are intended to assist the Democratic National Committee in efforts like state recounts or curing ballots. One official acknowledged the campaign has some debt but downplayed its importance, stating that it would be resolved by year’s end. They also noted that, given the outcome of the election, it would have been worse to have lost while sitting on unspent funds.
However, several other campaign officials questioned this explanation, arguing that the fundraising appeals were primarily intended to pay down existing debt. One senior official labeled the practice of soliciting funds after a decisive loss, despite an enormous fundraising haul, as "appalling." Another described it as "disgusting." A third official, who had received numerous complaints from donors, expressed concern about how Democrats could maintain credibility in the future.
The current financial situation of Harris’ campaign is shrouded in secrecy, even for those within the organization. No one has been able or willing to provide a clear assessment of the campaign’s finances. While some reports have suggested that the campaign’s debt has reached tens of millions of dollars—a narrative fueled by conservative media—there is little clarity on the actual figure. Even former President Donald Trump commented on the situation, joking on social media, “Whatever we can do to help them during this difficult period.”
The campaign has refuted claims of overwhelming debt, with one senior official stating, “That’s completely wrong.” However, five sources familiar with the campaign’s finances confirmed to NBC News that debt does exist, though the exact amount remains uncertain. Several sources speculated that the debt could be as low as $6 million.
One official attempted to reassure the public, saying, “If there is any debt, it will be minimal and addressed in the immediate weeks and months, not the long term.” While invoices continue to come in and donations continue to flow, a full financial report may not be available until January.
In a positive development, the Democratic National Committee, operating as a separate entity, has reported no debt.
